Is our Freedom of Speech being eroded?
Palace are being investigated by the POLICE as fans displayed a banner saying "'Premier League Owners Test' 'Terrorism, beheading, civil rights abuses, murder, censorship and persecution'.

Q. Which of those accusations were false?

Ans. None of them.

The right to protest is at the very heart of democracy but it seems to be slowly taken away from the common people.

It's a worrying time and needs to be acted upon before we become a totalitarian state. Only 80 years ago, over 300,000 incredibly brave soldiers gave up their lives to allow us to be free from such despotic attitudes.

So this thread was a kneejerk overreaction then?

Re: Is our Freedom of Speech being eroded?
BBC has an article that says the same as the banner.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-58930311

The six reasons they give that make the Newcastle takeover controversial are given in this order:
1) Murder of Jamal Khashoggi
2) Jailing of women's rights activists
3) Crackdown on prominent intellectuals, clerics and reformists (more jailing)
4) The devastating war in Yemen
5) Extensive use of the death penalty (be heading)
6) Punishment of same-sex relations (more Jailing)

Perhaps the police should also investigate the BBC?
Crazy that they don’t want people to express opinions about legitimate accusations that are what should be being investigated.

Doesn't directly accuse the Newcastle owners so what can they do?

I think it's rather good. Anything to upset the ass licking PL and FA.

We will soon live in a society that is so liberal and free that you won't be able to say anything at all.

"300,000 incredibly brave soldiers gave up their lives to allow us to be free from such despotic attitudes."
Many may have believed that to be the case at the time, only many learnt in their later years they needlessly gave up their lives for this communist overthrow of the West we enjoy today.

Re: Is our Freedom of Speech being eroded?
The police will declare there's nothing wrong with the banner, because it breaks no laws. The PL will still ban it, and others like it, because they will say it offends some people and depicts 'acts of brutality'.

Nailed on. We're all being taken for a giant fucking ride in the PL and the men driving are always those with the biggest wallets.

Re: Is our Freedom of Speech being eroded?
Yep, the police definitely have to take a look at it: not because there's anything wrong with the banner, but because of the racial, social and ECONOMIC sensitivities involved.

Never under-estimate the money men in all of this - they're the people who got the Saudis through the "fit and proper" bollocks in the first place, by waving a large chequebook in front of the over-excited Premier League.

Nothing wrong with that banner, in my opinion. I hope there are many more like it around Premier League grounds - plus shirts emblazoned with 'Khashoggi'. More than almost any other takeover, I've taken against this Newcastle cesspit of cockwaffle.

Re: Is our Freedom of Speech being eroded?
Because comma someone has made a complaint about the banner being racist, now you and I will look at it and see nothing racist about it at all.

The police however have a predicament.

They go back to the complainant and say “ we can’t see anything racist on this banner “

The complainant then goes on social media to accuse the British Police of being institutionally racist and failing to act on complaints of racism.

This is why they are probably studying this banner in minute detail just so they can cover themselves.

It’s the way of the world. Screamy, whiny left wingers rule 👍👍

Re: Is our Freedom of Speech being eroded?
If a complaint is made the police have to react.

They obviously need to say that they have received a complaint and will investigate
Not sure what their prejudging of RACIST ABUSE as part of that statement was needed or appropriate

Re: Is our Freedom of Speech being eroded?
Calling a bunch of middle-class lefty, Palace fans ‘the common people’ is a bit of a stretch.

You lot voted for Khan, the Met answer to him.

Twoleftfeet if the police are desperate to find anything racist on the banner could you explain to us why this is so?

How dare anyone even suggest there is a problem with free speach. I think you'll find you can say white privilege as much as you like!

Re: Is our Freedom of Speech being eroded?
Apparently they are desperately trying to find if anything on the banner was in anyway racist.

Police spend more time on nonsense like this than they do on actual crimes.

Re: Is our Freedom of Speech being eroded?
We have complete free speech.

Unless you upset certain groups or genders, sexualities, religious beliefs, or say rude word, or make someone sad.

Oh.

Either all speech is free or none of it is, and we've reached a point now where what you can say has been dictated by people with agendas.

Jordan peterson has much better arguments about this, but people don't want to hear his point. They just scream at him.

However I defer to the quote "I might not agree what you are saying, but I'll defend your right to say it"

Re: Is our Freedom of Speech being eroded?
The best way to remove the right to protest is to get the public to make that decision.

I would hire a load of actors and get them to pretend to care about hole insulation, block up loads of roads, get the police to stand by without doing anything until such time as as the public get so angry they begin dragging them off the road and applauding the governments decision to enforce police powers against protesting.

It’s coming

Re: Is our Freedom of Speech being eroded?
Not yet! But is in danger in my opinion!

Cancel culture and all this bollocks with gender and BLM has seen anyone not towing the line being targeted, just look at the nonsense with Netflix etc.

2 world wars and freedom was saved, but a whole generation is growing up believing in canceling anything that doesn’t fit a certain narrative and ideology.

Humans have a way if fucking things up, looks like all those lives lost fighting the Nazis will have all been forgotten about in the not too distant future, our grandkids are going to inherit one fucked up world

Corporate censorship. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the FA that called the police in.

Got to keep the gravy train rolling.
